Evidence of Learning
Explain the structure of the lesson and how you intended to use the digital technologies you selected.
As it was the start of a new material, the teacher firstly checked the students’ background knowledge then started delivering the materials. It is important to know the background knowledge of the students because what they have in their mind will affect the way they learn the materials in the class (Fisher and Frey, 2014). The teacher used an ‘open ended question’ tool on Nearpod to make the checking students’ background knowledge more interactive and effective. After knowing what the students already understood about the material, the teacher continued to the next stage which is delivering the main material using Slide Deck. In between the slides, the teacher also included some ‘checking for understanding’ questions such as matching the pairs and pollings to make sure that the material was well delivered. It is also necessary to include these kinds of formative assessment to know what the students got after learning together with the teacher (Fisher and Frey, 2014). Lastly, as part of the formative assessment, the teacher also prepared a gamified quiz using the ‘time to climb’ tool on Nearpod. This tool allowed the teacher to make the quiz more exciting and fun. It also helps the teacher to make sure that every student is on track as there is also the option of setting a timer.
Justify your choice of digital technologies in relation to the learning objective(s) of the lesson.
Based on my observation result, the students in my class are easily overwhelmed and stressed so the mentor teacher suggested that I make the learning more fun. After getting this suggestion, I started searching the platform that is not only engaging but also helps the students understand the material easier. Then I found Nearpod and when I compared it to the other digital technologies, it has more various and complete features. I can use the feature on Nearpod to check students’ understanding as well as to make the class more exciting and fun. Using the matching pairs tool, I can make sure that the students understand the materials or not. I can also make the students practice what they have learned using the open ended questions tool. Using the time to climb tool, I can gamify my quiz to make the class more fun and even activate the students’ motivation during the teaching and learning progress (Dexway, 2019).
Tell us how this experience compares with how you would have taught the lesson without digital technologies.
The digital technology that I used really helped me to interact more with the students as the situation and condition did not allow me to come and interact directly with them. This digital technology also helped me monitor my students’ work remotely and live. It also allowed me to keep my students on track as I could set timer to each of my slides as well as my questions. That it allowed me to gamify my quiz was also a really big help to lessen students’ stress, to raise the mood in the class, and also to assess all of my students. Without the use of this digital technology, my online class would probably be very ineffective and boring.
