What did I learn? What can I improve?

Evidence of Reflection

  • Analyze the lesson in terms of learning and using digital technologies.

The digital technology used in this class is Nearpod, a platform that allows the user to make a presentation more interactive. This platform actually has various features but the ones being used by the teacher are open ended questions, matching pairs, polling, and time to climb. During the presentation, students are given questions that can trigger them to be active in the class. Those questions will also help them understand the materials easier. When the questions popped up, what students need to do is to type their answer based on their understanding and the answers will be displayed in the presentation anonymously. This is in accordance with the research done by Freeman, Blayney and Ginns (2006) that concludes “...anonymity, as afforded by electronic response systems in this context, is a critical factor affecting student willingness to participate within class exercises”. It shows how anonymity affects students’ activeness in the class because when answers are displayed anonymously, they will think more about what to answer rather than who answers. Practicing the use of different expressions are also being done using interactive questions on Nearpod. The last feature used is the time to climb tool. In this slide, students will enter a game which actually is a quiz to test their understanding about that day’s materials. Students can choose their characters then enter the game field, those who could answer the questions correctly first will be able to climb the furthest and become the winner.

  • Analyze the aspects of your teaching practice and your learners’ learning with digital technologies that need improvement.

The aspects of my teaching that need to be improved in the future are class and time management during the learning using digital technology. In real practice, the number of students who answer the questions and join the discussion actively are only half of the whole class. As the session with this class is only once, I could not really evaluate deeply why they were mostly inactive during the class but what I notice is that the students have always been inactive even before I started the teaching practice: when I was still observing them. In the future, doing a brief evaluation after each class might help. It is also related to the evaluation of time management. I think I was too in a hurry when explaining the materials because the class was only 30 minutes long and this made me dissatisfied. Deciding the priority of the materials based on the students’ need should be done later when I do the next teaching practice. Another aspect that could be improved in the future is building rapport with the students. I assumed that one of the reasons why the students are inactive during the class is because they are still uncomfortable with me as I am a new teacher there. Thus in the future, I will try to start building rapport even before I begin my teaching practice.
