In my last semester, I was having a social program for my Pancasila final project. It was held in one of the orphanages in South Jakarta. There were for about ten girls and a boy in that orphanage. During the program which consisted of several sessions and most of the sessions was inviting the kids to play the traditional games, I noticed they were so quiet. When my friends and I asked them how they felt about the games, what they thought, they did not really want to respond. Even when we gave them chance to ask anything related to the session we arranged, they said they had no questions.
Later after we finished our session, while waiting for the head of the orphanage I offered them if they had any homework I could help and they directly answered yes excitedly. They then asked me so many questions, asked if they had done the homework right, and even invited me to discuss some lessons.
I was surely surprised.
I expected that they would be excited if I invite them to play, but they seemed to be more excited when they were talking about school lessons. I then noticed two different things: all-controlled and autonomy. The kids were more excited when they were given autonomy and I think the system of our education are still lack of students autonomy. Everything are controlled, without giving any attention to students' interest. #whatsmissing #fromoureducation #reflection #1
